Course Description: In this session we will dive into the power an explore board can have on activating background knowledge. Did you know that a student’s reading level of a text can change based on their background knowledge? Come learn how to empower students so that they can take ownership of their background knowledge and allow for interest based exploration before reading an important text.

What You’ll Experience: Teachers will experience an example of using an explore board before reading a challenging text. Then they will create their own explore board they can use in their classroom. Creating explore boards with links to information and experiences that will build students background knowledge of a topic, theme, or issue.
What Challenge You Will Do: Create an explore board for a text you will read with your students.
